Sahir Ludhianvi, born Abdul Hayee, was one of the greatest Urdu poets and Hindi film lyricists. A Progressive Writers' Movement member, his poetry combined romantic lyricism with sharp social critique. His verses for films like Pyaasa and Kabhi Kabhi remain timeless classics of Hindi cinema.
❝Sometimes a thought crosses my mind, that had my life passed in the soft shade of your tresses, it might have flourished, might have bloomed green, rather than this darkness that is my life's destiny.❞
❝This world of palaces, of thrones, of crowns, this world of societies hostile to humankind, this world of customs hungry for wealth, what is it worth, even if this world were won.❞
❝That morning will surely come one day, when the veil of night slips from these dark centuries' head, when clouds of sorrow melt away, when the ocean of joy overflows, when the sky dances in rapture, when the earth sings its songs, that morning will surely come one day.❞
❝This world of palaces, of thrones, of crowns, this world of societies hostile to mankind, this world of customs hungry for wealth— what is it worth, even if this world were mine.❞
❝These lanes, these auction houses of allure, these plundered caravans of living, where, oh where are the guardians of honor, those who take pride in India—where are they now.❞
❝Sometimes a thought crosses my heart, that you were made for me alone. Before this, you lived among the stars somewhere, you were called to earth for me.❞
❝I have spent my nights in your memory, in thoughts of you I have passed my days. You are not here but your fragrance lingers — I have made you the purpose of all my ways.❞
❝Sometimes a thought comes into my heart — as if you were made for me. You were living somewhere among the stars before — you have been called to earth for me.❞
❝A tale it is not possible to bring to its end — Better to give it a beautiful turn and leave it there. Some bonds break — that is the only story — better to think a little before you break.❞
❝May your beauty endure, may my love remain, May the candle keep burning, the gathering stay bright. May we be here together, the garden fragrant — May life keep humming along, light and right.❞
❝On moonlit nights I am reminded of you, the light of stars brings peace to this heart. Whenever I gaze at this scene of nature, your face appears before my eyes — we are never apart.❞
❝Love in life today — or you will repent later, the moments you lose today you will search for tomorrow. Value the time you have — it never returns, if you don't claim your joy today you will only borrow.❞
❝Friends should be like this — make you laugh even in pain — who stand with you in grief and come in joy. True friendship is that which comes without asking — who light a lamp when the night is dark.❞
❝The thing I wanted to say to you — I could not say, It sat inside and burns there still. If you ever come, I will say it then — but you have not come — I am still waiting.❞
❝Even if this world is obtained, what of it? This world that we desire so greatly — What place does the poor have in the gathering of the rich? This world is cruel — so everyone says.❞
❝I have watched the world's pace — very slowly — flowers bloomed and leaves fell, very slowly. This was time's way — not our fault — this life kept moving on, very slowly.❞
❝If you are with me — what more could there be, in the heart I hold my meeting with you. In the loneliness of night I remember you — that is the sum of every feeling I knew.❞
❝I am a poet of a moment or two — my story lasts but moments, My existence lasts but moments, my youth lasts but moments. Before me, how many poets came and went — some left sighing, some left singing.❞
❝Good friends are those who say, you are right — but stop you when you are wrong. The world always agrees with you — a true friend shows you a mirror.❞
❝This night, this moonlight, this cool breeze — without you, all of this is meaningless. Nature's beauty seems worthless — when no one you own is near — this is solitude.❞
❝That morning shall surely come one day, after this night of such deep darkness. We shall keep walking on the roads, carrying every hope within our hearts.❞
❝What a beautiful cruelty time has inflicted — I remain no longer I, you no longer you. Yet those moments still come to mind — the ones we spent walking together.❞
❝I am a poet of a moment or two, A moment or two is my story, A moment or two is my existence, A moment or two is my youth. Before me, how many poets came, Came and then went away, Some left with sighs on their lips, Some sang their songs and went on their way.❞
❝Come, let us be strangers to each other once more, Let me hold no hope of you, let you see no faith from my core. Do not swear to understand my pain today, Have no intention to give me your grief's sway.❞
❝I am a poet of moments two or three, But this pain belongs to years that have been. On paper I will write out everything, But whose wound is this that I am bearing.❞
❝What is life but an offering of one's own soul and breath, None will understand if you try to explain until death. Just keep on living and keep on smiling along the way, This itself is the story of life throughout the day.❞
